or rather, I was gifted one by my father. He added a third i to my birth certificate, which is why I’m Caitilin rather than Caitlin. I like to think that this unintended slip lit my delight for the intricacies and irregularities of language—and gave me a precise eye for its inaccuracies.
My love of words began when I was very young, and it has led me by strange and wonderful ways to the work I do today, providing editing and advice to writers (like you!) to help improve the effectiveness and eloquence of written expression.
I have a deep respect for the potency and poetry of language, and I relish the resonance and nuance of words. I admire the way they can intrigue and inspire, igniting both ideas and action. I have a fascination for punctuation too. (That’s not weird, right?) I care about commas so you don’t have to, and I know how and when to wield a semicolon.
Over my years with Artful Words, I have been fortunate to work with many talented writers on an enticing array of projects, from collections of poetry to heartfelt memoirs and absorbing stories of imagined worlds. Regardless of the shape their words take, I want all my clients to feel pleasure and pride in their writing, and to be confident that every sentence and line means exactly what they intend. Our words are powerful, and it is important that we understand how to use them wisely. With consideration, they can offer connection and care while also engaging and enchanting their readers.
My approach to editing is collaborative, informed by a shared trust and respect between writer and editor. I blend sensitivity with skill in my editing, so my work is both instinctive and informed. And I value artistry as much as accuracy in written expression, so I focus on both when I edit.
Editing, for me, is an art, an act of creativity that I am privileged to practise, always exploring and learning more.
Experience has shown me that good writing changes lives, for readers and writers alike. I believe artful editing helps this happen. I’m happy to help you with this if I can, so get in touch and let me know if you’re interested in working together to enhance the meaning and artistry of your words.
